Boundary Waters
Project 2025 explicitly calls for the removal of legal protections for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in northern Minnesota. The United States federal government under the leadership of Donald Trump and his MAGA cohorts began a series of legislative attacks on the area in late 2025-early 2026 with the proposal of both H.J.Res.140 and S.2967.
Rep. Pete Stauber proposed H.J.Res.140, calling for the disapproval of Biden-era protections for the BWCAW - specifically a 20 year mining ban - under the Congressional Review Act. The goal is to allow Twin Metals MN, a mining company owned and directed by Chilean copper-mining conglomerate Antofagasta, to mine the BWCAW and permanently destroy one of the last "pristine wildernesses" in the world.
Just 2 months earlier, Sen. Mike Lee proposed S.2967 Border Lands Protection Act. This bill aims to grant DHS the ability to bypass existing government regulations in order to build tactical infrastructure including surveillance, roads, walls and detention centers within 100 miles of the U.S. border.
Along with the 2026 Homeland Security Funding Bill, which would give DHS 64.4 Billion USD in funding, these legislative efforts would result in the destruction and militarization of the Boundary Waters as well as significantly hamper efforts to fight and end climate change and the ethnic cleansing of immigrants within the U.S.
Our primary goal is to prevent these legislative acts from passing and promote permanent protections for the Boundary Waters.
